Traveling light means differently to difference people. Some people think that traveling light means taking two luggage instead of four. While others think light means a backpack. The rule is if you can’t carry all your bags, then you’re not traveling light. With the added fees that airlines impose, we all need to start packing light. That means even if you’re traveling overseas, pack as little as possible.

You can purchase most stuff you need if you happen to need them. I know people who pack their guide books, travel information books when they go to other countries. There’s no need for that. The best information you’ll ever get is from the front desk at the hotels. Another tip is never pack your shampoos, hair products, and electric toothbrush. Pack regular toothbrush so they’re not so bulky and heavy.

I often wonder how much is too much when it comes to packing. I often see travelers at the airport, the Taxi stand with carts full of bags. You almost wonder whether they’re moving or just traveling. I see three bags stacked on top of each other, large ones and small ones. Then there’s the bags being pulled next to the cart. How many bags do you really need? I’ve gone to college with just one suitcase. If you find yourself absolutely in need of a cart, then you know you packed too much. The rule should be packing enough and you can still carry the bag, if not, then it’s too much.

Most international flights still allow 2 free bags checked in. But that doesn’t mean you have to. If you can fit all things in one bag, do that. Your life will be so much easier if you pack light and travel light. Never pack too many pairs of shoes, they take the most space and you won’t need them all. I know people who pack rain boots just in case it rains, do you wear rain boots at home?

Having too many bags and too much stuff will stress you out while traveling. Because you end up taking care of them and enjoy the trip less.

I used to search online and find travel packing lists complied by travel experts. I always find the items way too comprehensive. They suggest shampoos, hair dryer, soap, compass, alarm clock, and even door lock. I find some of the lists funny. You’re going to travel, whether for vacation or for business, not going to camp out. I’ve even read packing lists that include flashlight, headstrap, extra batteries (bulbs?), knife, screwdrivers, pliers, scissors… The list goes on. The experts even claim that you can pack and travel light with one bag. How do you pack all that stuff in one bag?

Unless you’re camping out in Europe, anywhere you stay will provide shampoo and soap. I really don’t get the part of bringing knife, screwdrivers, pliers, or scissors. If you were packing for college, then I’d agree with that list. If you’re spending one week in Europe, Asia, or any parts of the world, I’m not quite sure about these items.

Travel experts have been saying that we all need a packing list before we go on any trips longer than a weekend. But do we really need one? How many of us actually sit down and write out a packing list before we pack? I’ve never done one. I don’t think it’s necessary to write down a list, but mentally we do need to figure out what to pack before we get to the airport with 3 bags each person. Long gone the days of free luggage. If you fly trans Pacific flight going to places like China and Japan, you still get to check in two bags for free on most flights. But I always wonder whether people use all the things they pack.

Unless there’s someone picking you up from the airport, it’s such a hassle to drag your bags in the terminals. Try to see yourself do that after 14 hours of flight. It’s not a funny thing to do. Frequent travelers all know that light packing saves you a lot of trouble. It’s easier just to buy locally if you forget something. I always look at the travelers who drag 3 bags around and wonder whether they’re moving to a different city or just traveling. Packing 5 days of clothes is sufficient for trips that are longer than a week. You can always hand wash your clothes in the hotel if you bring the right kind of materials. So the bottom line is, there’s no need for an actual packing list, but you do need to plan ahead.

Many of us hate packing for trips. We seemed to get stressed out several days or even weeks ahead of time. But packing should be as much fun as the trip itself. The reason that we dread over packing is probably because we don’t know what to bring and we’ve packed unnecessary stuff in the past trips. So many times that I wished I didn’t pack the extra pairs of shoes or wished that I had packed at least one dressy outfit. When you travel to other parts of the world where people tend to dress up more, you look so out of place when you show up in jeans and t-shirts.

A recent trip to Prague taught me a good lesson. Who would think opera tickets could be bought on the same day of the performance at such inexpensive price. So I showed up in white pants and a somewhat dressy shirt, with a pair of sneakers! All other goers seemed to be local or people who packed enough. So now the lesson learned it to pack at least one dressy dress going to Europe or Asia.

The bottom line is to plan ahead. Know where you’re going and lay out the stuff you want to bring and trim them down gradually. Not bringing enough is as bad as bringing too much. I’m a light traveler which sometimes can be a real challenge to fit one week’s of clothes in a backpack. There’s one little trick I learned over the years is that you can wash your shirts on the hotel. And you can re wear your jeans 3 days in a row!

Shoes…. Shoes are the hardest to pack and the most important to pack. If you bring one pair of shoes that are not comfortable, your trip will be directly affected by them. But just how many to pack? For women, I suggest to wear one pair comfy ones and pack one pair of dressy ones. Personally I’d wear my New Balance sneakers and pack one pair of dressy flats. No heels, because unless you’re planning on going to an opera house or fancy parties, seldom do you wear them. A pair of dressy flat will do the job if you pair them with a nice dress.

I have friends who pack 3 to 4 pairs of shoes on a one week trip. You have to ask yourself, do you even wear that many pairs at home? I would not pack anything that I don’t wear often at home. And most important, break in your shoes if they’re new. Even sneakers!

Packing light is a personal choice, really. I’ve always been a light traveler. It’s not because I don’t want to pay for the extra luggage fees. I traveled light even before the extra fees were charged by the airlines. It’s almost a lifestyle choice. Many people can live comfortably with minimum stuff, and other can’t. I have friends who are willing to pay fees or to send their belongings ahead of themselves to the destination. I will not. I don’t have much stuff to begin with. Why would I purchase things just to send to my vacation place? I can live 2 pairs of pants and 3 shirts for a week. If you can too, then you’re light traveler also.

Many people ask me how to pack efficiently? I always remind them that in order to pack light, you have to be able to live light. Otherwise you need to brings your things.

My husband’s aunt loves to travel with everything she needs and possibly wants. She packs two scales with her on trips just in case one scale would break. I also know people who travel with a backpack no matter where they’re going. I myself have gone with a single backpack to China on a 10-day trip. Most people pack somewhere in between these two extreme. But as airlines begin to charge extra on bags, it’s a good idea to learn to pack light.

The good news is, most airlines are still allowing 2 pieces checking in on transatlantic and transpacific flights. But if you probably have noticed that the lighter you pack, the less stress you get while on trips. Frequent business travelers all seem to understand packing the essentials, and only the essentials. But most people tend to pack more than just necessary for a stress-free vacation. There are many things you really don’t need such as a radio, hair dryer, etc. Most hotel rooms have these, and even if they don’t, you can live a few days without.

As the airlines are adding fees for any checked bags, travelers are packing lighter and trying to pack in as much as possible in their carry ons. I’ve recently discovered that a well organized backpack is a lot easier to travel with than a carry on luggage. It’s true that you don’t want to look like a backpacker, but some well-made backpacks are handy enough and yet still looks nice for leisure travel. The other thing you need is space savers. They’re handy when comes to pack loose clothes.

Many women pack shampoos, conditioners, and everything they have in their bathroom at home. You don’t need all that. If you’re visiting relatives, friends, you don’t need those. If you’re staying in hotels, you don’t need those. The days of packing a dozen underwear are gone. You only need 5 underwear and wash them by hand in the hotel. Also you only need one formal wear, be it a dress or a blouse. Mix and match. Shoes, 2 pairs are enough. One pair to walk in and one pair to party with. I’m planning a European trip for one week in the summer with one backpack. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Every year we try to book the best fare possible and take the whole family to see parents and in-laws. It’s all the same. Regardless how early we book the tickets, it’s always very high price around Christmas time. It doesn’t matter whether we leave on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th, or even Christmas day. So this year, I just changed the whole tradition of our family. Visit grandmother in January. It’s effortless. A round trip tickets to FL from NY costs $165, tax and fees included. Amazing, isn’t it?

We would have paid $530 around Christmas time. So the best way to get deals is to avoid the time that everyone is going. However, how many people are willing to do that? Very few. Most working people are using the holidays for family visit to avoid spending vacation time at work. If you can do it, take a few vacation days off in January, then do it. Also check with grandmother and see whether she’s OK with it. Most often, it’s not that OK since the reason we’re going to FL is to celebrate Christmas with the family! If so, then keep paying higher price. It’s either money or family.
