I often wonder how much is too much when it comes to packing. I often see travelers at the airport, the Taxi stand with carts full of bags. You almost wonder whether they’re moving or just traveling. I see three bags stacked on top of each other, large ones and small ones. Then there’s the bags being pulled next to the cart. How many bags do you really need? I’ve gone to college with just one suitcase. If you find yourself absolutely in need of a cart, then you know you packed too much. The rule should be packing enough and you can still carry the bag, if not, then it’s too much.

Most international flights still allow 2 free bags checked in. But that doesn’t mean you have to. If you can fit all things in one bag, do that. Your life will be so much easier if you pack light and travel light. Never pack too many pairs of shoes, they take the most space and you won’t need them all. I know people who pack rain boots just in case it rains, do you wear rain boots at home?

Having too many bags and too much stuff will stress you out while traveling. Because you end up taking care of them and enjoy the trip less.

Travel experts have been saying that we all need a packing list before we go on any trips longer than a weekend. But do we really need one? How many of us actually sit down and write out a packing list before we pack? I’ve never done one. I don’t think it’s necessary to write down a list, but mentally we do need to figure out what to pack before we get to the airport with 3 bags each person. Long gone the days of free luggage. If you fly trans Pacific flight going to places like China and Japan, you still get to check in two bags for free on most flights. But I always wonder whether people use all the things they pack.

Unless there’s someone picking you up from the airport, it’s such a hassle to drag your bags in the terminals. Try to see yourself do that after 14 hours of flight. It’s not a funny thing to do. Frequent travelers all know that light packing saves you a lot of trouble. It’s easier just to buy locally if you forget something. I always look at the travelers who drag 3 bags around and wonder whether they’re moving to a different city or just traveling. Packing 5 days of clothes is sufficient for trips that are longer than a week. You can always hand wash your clothes in the hotel if you bring the right kind of materials. So the bottom line is, there’s no need for an actual packing list, but you do need to plan ahead.

Shoes…. Shoes are the hardest to pack and the most important to pack. If you bring one pair of shoes that are not comfortable, your trip will be directly affected by them. But just how many to pack? For women, I suggest to wear one pair comfy ones and pack one pair of dressy ones. Personally I’d wear my New Balance sneakers and pack one pair of dressy flats. No heels, because unless you’re planning on going to an opera house or fancy parties, seldom do you wear them. A pair of dressy flat will do the job if you pair them with a nice dress.

I have friends who pack 3 to 4 pairs of shoes on a one week trip. You have to ask yourself, do you even wear that many pairs at home? I would not pack anything that I don’t wear often at home. And most important, break in your shoes if they’re new. Even sneakers!

As the airlines are adding fees for any checked bags, travelers are packing lighter and trying to pack in as much as possible in their carry ons. I’ve recently discovered that a well organized backpack is a lot easier to travel with than a carry on luggage. It’s true that you don’t want to look like a backpacker, but some well-made backpacks are handy enough and yet still looks nice for leisure travel. The other thing you need is space savers. They’re handy when comes to pack loose clothes.

Many women pack shampoos, conditioners, and everything they have in their bathroom at home. You don’t need all that. If you’re visiting relatives, friends, you don’t need those. If you’re staying in hotels, you don’t need those. The days of packing a dozen underwear are gone. You only need 5 underwear and wash them by hand in the hotel. Also you only need one formal wear, be it a dress or a blouse. Mix and match. Shoes, 2 pairs are enough. One pair to walk in and one pair to party with. I’m planning a European trip for one week in the summer with one backpack. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Whether you’re traveling for family vacation or business trips, there are some tips on how to pack your money and documents. Leave most of your credit cards at home. You only need two cards: a credit car and a debt card. Before you leave, be sure to call your bank and your credit card company and let them that you’re traveling and give them the dates. In rare cases nowadays that you need traveler’s checks. The best way to get foreign currency is through ATM machines. Be sure you can use your debt card in the country. There’s also a tip, don’t leave too much money in your checking account if you’re concerned about the safety of foreign withdraws.

Bring your passport if you’re going overseas or driver’s license if domestic. Be sure to make make copies of the IDs and put them in the suitcase. Bring health and travel insurance document and vaccination documents depending on your destination. Print out all the confirmation number and contact number of your hotel, air tickets, car reservation, and itinerary. Don’t forget the address and direction to your hotel or car rental place.

If you haven’t paid extra luggage fees to any airlines, consider yourself lucky. Although most airlines still allow one or two pieces of free luggage on international flights, you almost certain have to pay for domestic flights now.

Many savvy travelers I know have been shipping their bags to destinations in advance. Or if you have one of those award programs, frequent flyer miles or airline credit cards that allow you one free luggage, then you can still pack all your essentials like the old days.

But for most travelers, the old days are gone. Plus I’ve never been a big fan of large check in bags anyway. I’ve gone to Europe and Asia with one carry-one even before the airlines started charging fees. If you’re just going for a trip, there’s no need to bring too much. Knowing what to pack and use all packed clothing is the key.

Be expected to hand wash some of your clothes in hotels. Bring wrinkle-proof and light, fast drying clothes. Take advantage of space saver bags to pack underwear, shirts. Avoid jeans as it takes too long for them to dry. Just pack enough for 5 days of clothes even if you’re going for 10 days. You can re-wear and hand wash.

We probably all have bad this kind of situation: packing too many clothes that we don’t get to wear them all; or pack so little that we have to do laundry in the hotel. The ideal packing is to have just enough and wear them all before we come back. I have this relative who even packs 2 scales with her to go on trip just in case one fails. Now that’s an extreme. Number one, she doesn’t need to weight herself for 10 days in Europe. Number two, if one scale fails, that’s OK.

With the increased fees at the major airlines and limited carryons, we really need to pay attention to what and how we pack. The most important rule is that never pack the things you don’t even wear at home. There’s a reason why you don’t wear them at home, because they’re either uncomfortable or impractical. Unless you’re taking a luxury cruise, there’s no need to pack all fancy dresses, gowns, and black tie stuff. Pack what you wear everyday. Count the days you will be traveling and add one formal wear on top of that.

Problem solved: Who, where, what and how much. Those are all the questions that you need to ask to find out how to pack efficiently for the beach.

Who

Who exactly are you taking to the beach? If you’re planning on bringing 5 children or more, then you’re in for some heavy duty lugging around. But if you’re just going with a friend or two, then you could just go with the bare minimum.

It’s a given that travelling light can be quite expensive specially if you’re going to be taking children with you. But if you’re group is composed of only two or three adults, then you could simply opt for the things that only you need.

Where

This may be a no brainer but if you live near the beach, then you could forego bringing a lot of things. After all, you only need to walk home to get what you need right? But if you’re going to the next State or the next country, you might consider packing things which you could subsist on for at least three days to a week. Again, the first question on who are you going with applies.

It’s more difficult to bring children across great distances than it is to move yourself. To be honest, as a parent myself, I sometimes don’t even think about what we need to bring. I just get the essentials which are clothes, towels, toiletry and money. Always those four. Anything, other than those are not needed.

Always remember, the closer the beach, the less stuff you need to bring. The farther the beach the more things you have to bring.

What

Family members in particular have that tendency to bring a looooot of things when going to the beach because of the perception of boredom. You’d have to understand that kids sometimes can have very limited imaginations about family excursions. Little Joey over there would probably not like the idea of being away from his computer for two days without Internet, that’s why he is going to bring his Laptop. Sandra doesn’t like to lose contact with her friends so she’ll bring her iPhone, iPod, iPad and iWhatever kit. The baby’s the most demanding. You’ll have to bring disposable diapers, feeding bottles, more than extra amount of clothes, umbrella, the milk can, a lot of clean water, powders and lotions. That’s why it’s highly inadvisable to bring babies to the beach.

How Much

Here’s the most important question of all. How much money are you going to spend? I’m not talking about your budget but rather your willingness to burn that cash. If you can afford to buy new clothes and everything you need near the beach then by all means, carry as little stuff as you could.

If you’re on a tight budget and you’re constrained to work around it, then you can expect to bring more things since retail outlets near beaches, wherever they are have a reputation of selling things at three times the price that they would normally fetch for!

At the end of the day your situation would determine how efficiently you can pack things. The basic rule is, bring only what you need.

Next, I choose the things I “want” to bring and put those things in a separate pile. After I have done this I “roll” my clothes from my “needs” pile and place them in the suitcase.

Rolling your clothes rather then folding them always makes more room in your suitcase. If there is any room left, I then add the things from my “want” to bring pile. Make sure that you put any liquid items in a zip lock bag so that if it does open up during your trip you won’t have toothpaste or shampoo all over your clothes.

Also, don’t forget to save room in your suitcase for souvenirs that you will want to bring home!
