My husband’s aunt loves to travel with everything she needs and possibly wants. She packs two scales with her on trips just in case one scale would break. I also know people who travel with a backpack no matter where they’re going. I myself have gone with a single backpack to China on a 10-day trip. Most people pack somewhere in between these two extreme. But as airlines begin to charge extra on bags, it’s a good idea to learn to pack light.

The good news is, most airlines are still allowing 2 pieces checking in on transatlantic and transpacific flights. But if you probably have noticed that the lighter you pack, the less stress you get while on trips. Frequent business travelers all seem to understand packing the essentials, and only the essentials. But most people tend to pack more than just necessary for a stress-free vacation. There are many things you really don’t need such as a radio, hair dryer, etc. Most hotel rooms have these, and even if they don’t, you can live a few days without.

As the airlines are adding fees for any checked bags, travelers are packing lighter and trying to pack in as much as possible in their carry ons. I’ve recently discovered that a well organized backpack is a lot easier to travel with than a carry on luggage. It’s true that you don’t want to look like a backpacker, but some well-made backpacks are handy enough and yet still looks nice for leisure travel. The other thing you need is space savers. They’re handy when comes to pack loose clothes.

Many women pack shampoos, conditioners, and everything they have in their bathroom at home. You don’t need all that. If you’re visiting relatives, friends, you don’t need those. If you’re staying in hotels, you don’t need those. The days of packing a dozen underwear are gone. You only need 5 underwear and wash them by hand in the hotel. Also you only need one formal wear, be it a dress or a blouse. Mix and match. Shoes, 2 pairs are enough. One pair to walk in and one pair to party with. I’m planning a European trip for one week in the summer with one backpack. I’ll let you know how it works out.

If you haven’t paid extra luggage fees to any airlines, consider yourself lucky. Although most airlines still allow one or two pieces of free luggage on international flights, you almost certain have to pay for domestic flights now.

Many savvy travelers I know have been shipping their bags to destinations in advance. Or if you have one of those award programs, frequent flyer miles or airline credit cards that allow you one free luggage, then you can still pack all your essentials like the old days.

But for most travelers, the old days are gone. Plus I’ve never been a big fan of large check in bags anyway. I’ve gone to Europe and Asia with one carry-one even before the airlines started charging fees. If you’re just going for a trip, there’s no need to bring too much. Knowing what to pack and use all packed clothing is the key.

Be expected to hand wash some of your clothes in hotels. Bring wrinkle-proof and light, fast drying clothes. Take advantage of space saver bags to pack underwear, shirts. Avoid jeans as it takes too long for them to dry. Just pack enough for 5 days of clothes even if you’re going for 10 days. You can re-wear and hand wash.

We all face the same problems. We tend to over pack. But your packing and your bags will greatly influence how you travel. Don’t we all remember that perfect vacation except with too much stuff to carry? With the fees the airlines now have, the less you bring, the easier your trip will turn out. Unless you have pickup service when you get to the destination, carrying all your bags and trying to get a taxi, or an airport bus will make your 8 hour flight seem much longer. If you can do with one suitcase and one carry on bag for one person, it’ll be the best way to go. Personally I only carry one large backpack now, even going to Europe. Unless you’re attending a college there you don’t need to have fresh daily outfit if you’re just staying there for one week. Bring 3-4 days’ clothes and hand wash them in the hotel.

No matter how you reduce the number of shirts and dresses you bring, you always end up trying to jam everything in the suitcase. Many experts suggest that rolling clothes is the best way to avoid wrinkles and save space.

Here’s a little trick that I have learned throughout my traveling. Buy the travel sized space saver bags. Depending on how long you will be gone, get 3 of these great bags and you won’t regret. Use one for all your under wears and socks. One for your shirts and one for dresses.

Fold your clothes normally and put them in the bag and vacuum seal it. It’ll compress the space by 75% less. Although they will weigh the same, you have more room. My experiences with them are: a full suitcase can become half full. Don’t put jeans, hats, and such in the space savers as they don’t compress as much. Usually it’s the soft and bulky items like sweaters compress the most.

As I begin to pack my suitcase for any trip, the first thing that I do is figure out everything that I “need” to bring, and put it in one pile. Next, I choose the things I “want” to bring and put those things in a separate pile. After I have done this I “roll” my clothes from my “needs” pile and place them in the suitcase.

Rolling your clothes rather then folding them always makes more room in your suitcase. If there is any room left, I then add the things from my “want” to bring pile. Make sure that you put any liquid items in a zip lock bag so that if it does open up during your trip you won’t have toothpaste or shampoo all over your clothes.

Also, don’t forget to save room in your suitcase for souvenirs that you will want to bring home!

Have you ever been on a trip with someone you swear packed their entire closet? Are you the person that seems to forget something on a trip because you didn’t know what to take? Vacation and family travel will soon be in high gear. Because of all the travel and weight restrictions placed on travelers today, you may find that you have added stress just trying to pack for your trip.

Several years ago, I traveled to Germany for a week. I challenged myself to see if I could pack for a week of travel and sight seeing while feeling comfortable yet put together using a small, “weekend” sized bag. The hardest part of this decision was choosing a signature color to wear for an entire week!! Rest assured it can be done.

Perhaps you are planning an exotic vacation or going on a weekend trip; maybe you are going on an extended vacation, or just to the relatives. Regardless of where you will be going, the rules really do not change in planning your wardrobe. My recommendation is to create stories, vignettes, or ensembles and remember these key words: core and signature color as you begin to pack. It will make your travel effortless and easy.

Core Color is a base from which all of your accessories and tops will work. It gives support to the other actors (wardrobe pieces) in the story. Signature Color is the color that you look good and feel great in. Working with your core and signature colors will give you flexibility to change your looks (your stories) as the day changes. No, you won’t have your entire closet, but you will endure a stress free, worry free wardrobe while away. It’s funny but true; less is really more if you follow these six travel tips.

1.Select 5 easy pieces in a one neutral solid color (black, brown, tan, or navy, etc)

-1 Slack

-1 Short

-1 Jacket

-1 Skirt

-1 Jeans(white or dark denim)

2. Select Novelty Pieces-add your signature color

-1 Raincoat or sweater (a outer layering piece adds color)

-1 White shirt or blouse

-1 White t-shirt

-1 5 tops in different styles in your signature color (3/4 length, tank, sleeveless, etc)

-1 Print top must be in signature color you have chosen (optional)

-1 Dress (optional-in core or signature color)

-1 Pashmina or wrap in your signature color

3. 1 workout or lounging outfit

4. Accessories in your signature color (scarves, handbag, necklace, bangles, etc)

5. 3 belts (1 dressy, 1 casual, 1 trendy- core color)

6. 3-4 Shoes (walking or exercise, dressy, casual flats, sandals or loafers core color)

It goes without saying that you will know to pack your sleepwear and lingerie. Just don’t forget special lingerie should your tops and bottoms require it. Once you have pulled your wardrobe looks (vignettes) together with your signature color, you will see how easy it is to mix and match your core pieces and create different mood altering looks. No matter what the occasion or where you are going, you will feel dressed appropriately.

Add a few accessories and be dressed for the evening. Change your shoes and be dressed for a day of sight seeing. It is easy, effortless and you’ll look good, feel great, and have fun doing it!

P.S. Don’t forget your camera to record all your great new looks and fun you’ll have!
